Militaries ignore protest action in Gyumri (+video)

Servicemen of the Russian military base in Gyumri failed to come out to the participants of the rally demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Armenia.

On Saturday, January 12, Armenian residents gathered in front of the Russian military base in Gyumri on the fourth anniversary of the massacre of the Avetisyan family. They demanded to withdraw Russian troops from the country.

On January 12, 2015, seven members of the Avetisyan family were killed. Valery Permyakov, a soldier of the 102nd Russian military base was found guilty of the massacre and sentenced to life imprisonment.

About 30 people gathered for the rally, as its organizers, the European Party of Armenia, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. Other activists, who advocate the presence of the Russian military base in Armenia, have also held their action.

The organizers have noted that the action was mainly "silent" – "as a sign of respect for the memory of the deceased." Tigran Khzmalyan, a film director and the head of the European Party of Armenia, noted that he had no aim of attracting many people to the action.

The action ended without incident; nobody from the military base came out to the activists.
