AI urges Poland to cancel Abdurakhmanov's extradition

The return of the Chechen blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov to Russia threatens him with torture and unfair persecution, says the statement of the "Amnesty International" (AI), an international human rights organization.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Tumso Abdurakhmanov, who had had been put on the federal wanted list in Russia, tried to get asylum in Georgia and Poland, but both countries have denied his applications.

According to Chechen law enforcers, Abdurakhmanov had links with militants in Syria. However, the blogger claims that he had never been to Syria, calling a conflict with a high-ranking relative of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, as the reason for his criminal prosecution in Russia.

The AI has called on the head of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) not to extradite Tumso Abdurakhmanov to Russia. A copy of the AI's statement dated January 3 is at the disposal of the "Caucasian Knot".

The rights defenders point out that "in case Tumso Abdurakhmanov is returned to Russia, there is a real risk of his torture, inhuman treatment, unfair trial and other human rights violations." The AI urges Polish authorities to ensure his safety, not to deport him and provide him with protection in accordance with the Poland's commitments to protect human rights.
