Action against UN Migration Pact held in Georgia
The Georgia's support for the UN Pact will result in an increased migration from Asia and Africa, protesters in Tbilisi have stated.
An action of several dozen people was held in Tbilisi on December 24 at the building of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
"The signing of the Migration Pact provides for an unlimited opportunities for migrants from Africa and Asia to enter Georgia ... The country is not ready to accept hundreds, thousands and millions of migrants," Djondi Bagaturiya, a member of the "Kartuli Dasi" Party, said in his interview with the "Imedi" TV Company, the "News-Georgia" reports.
On December 17, the UN General Assembly approved the Migration Pact. It aims to support the countries that accept the largest number of migrants and provide refugees with rights in their countries of residence.
The document is not legally binding; it only opens up the possibility of global cooperation in this area. However, opponents of the document fear that the adoption thereof will lead to an increased flow of migrants to developed countries. At the same time, human rights defenders believe that the measures stipulated by the Pact are insufficient to protect migrants' rights, the "Echo of the Caucasus" reports.
