Number of detainees after clashes with police in Georgia reaches four

Two oppositionists have confessed to beating up a resident of the Gurjaani District during a clash with the police on December 16; in total, four activists were detained after the incident, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 17-18, Georgian law enforcers detained David Kirkitadze, a member of the "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, and another man, born in 1986. Mr Kirkitadze went on a hunger strike; and about one hundred UNM activists gathered today for a protest action in front of the courthouse in Gurjaani.

After clashes in the Gurjaani District, the police detained two more oppositionists, born in 1967 and 1971. Thus, the total number of detainees has reached four, the Georgian MIA says in its message received today by the "Caucasian Knot".

A resident of the village of Velistsikhe of the Gurjaani District told law enforcers that the activists detained today had physically insulted him. The detainees admitted their guilt. The case has been initiated under Article 126 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (Torture), the police have reported.
