Court leaves Azerbaijani oppositionists under administrative arrest

The Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has left Gusein Melik, an activist of the "Movement for Democracy and Prosperity", who had been sentenced to 25 days in jail, in custody. The oppositionist himself said he had been arrested for his posts on the Facebook.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 5, a Baku court arrested Mr Melik for disobeying the police; he was detained at night in his own apartment, his associates have reported.

The complaint against his arrest was considered by the BCA on December 18, Ellada Mamedli, the deputy chair of the above movement, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Gusein Melik told at the trial that he had committed no offense and had not 'disobeyed the police'. In his opinion, the true reason for his arrest was in his posts on the Facebook. Gusein said that at the police station he was told that he had been brought there for his abusive posts addressed to the state leadership," Ms Mamedli has stated, adding that the BCA has dismissed the complaint.
