Dormitory tenants in Nalchik complain about severe living conditions (+video)

The dormitory building in Ingushskaya Street in Nalchik has fallen into disrepair: dampness and fungus provoke diseases, and the deficit of shared sanitary facilities deprives residents of household amenities, the tenants have stated.

Their appeal was received by the Instagram of the "Caucasian Knot" on December 3.

The dormitory was built in 1976. Each floor thereof has only one shared bathroom and toilet. Tenants have to wait for several hours to take shower, they complain.

The plaster has fallen down from walls, which are affected by mould and fungus; in some places electrical wires are bare. According to tenants, many are sick because of the dampness.

There is no entrance door to the dormitory; therefore, homeless people and stray animals often enter the building. Because of this, tenants, especially children, are afraid to go to the toilet at night.

Tenants demand from the authorities to provide them with housing. There are still about 20 families remaining in the dormitory, who are not able to improve their living conditions on their own.

Valentina Smirnova, 81, has been living in the dormitory since 1976. "It's impossible to live in such conditions any longer ... I can hardly reach the toilet," the pensioner has complained.

Mukhamed Khashev is disabled, his leg was amputated. The man moves in a wheelchair and hardly survives without one's help in the hardships of the dormitory. He has no relatives; his wife has died.

Natasha Kanukova said that her mother died of tuberculosis, which she had caught due to the dampness in the dormitory. Natasha's youngest child suffers from bronchitis.

The administration of Nalchik said that "there will be no resettlement from the dormitory," since "there is no money in the republic."
