Dagestani historians tell about formation of border with Chechnya

The administrative Dagestani-Chechen border has clear historical background and need no revision, Dagestani historians have stated after the border discussion announced by the heads of the two republics.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 6, the head of Dagestan, Vladimir Vasiliev, announced his plans to discuss the republic's borders with the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. He promised to take into account the opinion of residents of Dagestan when considering the issue. In their turn, residents of Dagestan declared their readiness to protest, should the issue of changing the border arise.

Territorial disputes of Chechens and Dagestanis continue only in the highland border areas, a Dagestani historian has stated.

"The whole value of these lands is in using them as summer pastures," he has explained.

The establishment of the Dagestani-Chechen border between began only in the Russian epoch, Zurab Gadjiev, the head of the Dagestani Historical and Geographical Society, has noted.

Mamaikhan Agalarov, a well-known ethnologist, has pointed out that "Chechnya was included in the all-Dagestani territorial self-consciousness."
