Oppositionist Nemat Panakhly released in Azerbaijan
Nemat Panakhly, the Chairman of the National Statehood Party of Azerbaijan, has been released from arrest.
He was arrested on October 12 for 30 days on suspicion of disobeying police. Human rights defenders did not rule out that his political statements were the true reason for his arrest. On October 18, a Baku court rejected his complaint against the arrest.
Mr Panakhly plans to file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) about his arrest, the "Turan" News Agency writes.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Panakhly had been persecuted earlier. He himself stated that authorities were persecuting him for his political activeness. In June 2011, he was sentenced to six years in prison for hooliganism, but in March 2016, he was pardoned. In October 2017, the ECtHR declared his pre-trial arrest illegal.
