Court rules in favour of victims in case of payments to KBR's Chernobyl liquidators

The Urvan District Court has held its first session on the criminal case on improper payments to the liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP), who are sufferers in the case. Given the large number of them living in different districts of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), the court agreed to hold travel sessions at their residences.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the defendants in the case – Lera Alkhasova, a former employee of the KBR's Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Yuri Lyuev, her husband, and Ali Kuchmezov, the head of the "Soyuz-Chernobyl" organization – are accused of a large-scale fraud with payments to Chernobyl liquidators.

In 2011-2012, 484 KBR's liquidators demanded compensations of moral harm. The court satisfied their claims in the amount of more than 670 million roubles. In July 2012, the KBR's Supreme Court (SC) began cancelling the compensations and started collecting the already paid money from liquidators.
