Sochi residents pay tribute to victims of political repression

Sochi residents laid flowers to the monument to victims of repression and paid tribute to their memory by lighting candles. The people voiced the stories of their repressed relatives and called on their compatriots to remember the past to prevent it from happening again.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the day of October 30 is celebrated in Russia as the Day of remembrance for victims of political repressions. In Vladikavkaz, a restored memorial was opened, and in Karachay-Cherkessia, the first stone was laid to the foundation of the monument to victims of repression.

"There are a lot of repressed people in my family ... We should not destroy each other, neither morally nor physically," said Yevgeny Efimov from Kostroma.

"I am glad that Sochi pays tribute to those terrible years. However, we have many problems with making those things public. Pay attention: I came here alone. Many people do not know the history of their homeland and their families," the man added.

On October 29, on Facebook, Iren Ilyenkova, the leader of the branch of the "Yabloko" Party, called on Sochi residents to pay tribute to the memory of the victims of repression. On the same day, she was handed over a warning about inadmissibility of unsanctioned actions.

Nadezhda Nikiforova said that she was born in the Tomsk Region, where her parents were exiled. Father Danil Nikiforov was persecuted by the authorities since the 1930s for having his own farm. He lost all his property and was sent to exile to Kansk, from where he fled and found job at the construction of a bridge across the Yenisei River.
