Rights defenders achieve new check of Murad Amriev's case

After the complaint lodged by lawyers of the "Committee against Torture" (CaT), investigators began the 18th check of the application of the Chechen athlete, Murad Amriev, about torture by law enforcers in Grozny.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Amriev left Chechnya in 2013 after being detained and tortured. Chechen law enforcers declared him wanted on suspicion of using a faked document. On June 15, 2017, it became known that the case against Amriev was stopped, but in July he was still on the wanted list and was forced to hide.

In 2013, Murad Amriev was kidnapped in Grozny, taken to a police station and tortured for two days. According to his story, he was "hung up from the ceiling, beaten up and tortured with electric current," demanding that Murad's elder brother return to Chechnya (law enforcers believed that he was an accomplice in the assassination attempt on Magomed Dashaev, the Grozny police boss, in 2008).

The 17 decisions to refuse to initiate a case were recognized illegal, but "for many years of red tape no one suffered even disciplinary responsibility," the CaT has reported.

In August 2013, Amriev's bodily injuries after torture were fixed by a doctor.
