Georgian MPs offer criminal liability for country's maps without Abkhazia and South Ossetia

A draft law on criminal liability for making and spreading "maps of Georgia, which violate the territorial integrity" was registered at the Georgian Parliament.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the military conflict in the territory of Georgia and the unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia with the participation of Russia broke out at night on August 7-8, 2008. On August 26, 2008, Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. After that, Georgia broke off diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation and declared Abkhazia and South Ossetia to be its occupied territories.

Irakli Sesiashvili and Otar Chrdileli, the MPs from the ruling party "Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia", have suggested a new article in the Criminal Code of Georgia, assuming punishment for making, spreading, advertising, importing to or exporting from Georgia any printed versions of the map that violates the territorial integrity of Georgia.

The above violations assume imposition of a fine or imprisonment for up to 2 years.
