Chechen Muftiate joins World Islamic League
The accession of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM), or Muftiate, of Chechnya to the World Islamic League is another trump card in the hands of the Chechen leadership, which is positioning itself as a promoter of Islamic ideas in Russia, observers assert.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported referring to Orientalists that the major players in the struggle for the leadership in the Muslim community of Russia are the SAM of Dagestan and the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov.
On October 18, the Chechen delegation headed by Mufti Salakh-Khadji Mezhiev, which is visiting Saudi Arabia, signed a cooperation agreement with the World Islamic League, the Chechen Muftiate has announced.
"This is a great event for the republic and the whole of Russia, since before not a single Muslim religious organization from the Russian Federation was represented in the World Islamic League," the Muftiate has noted.
The headquarters of the World Islamic League is in Mecca; the organization has branches in ten countries of the world and has the status of a consultative organization at the United Nations.
However, according to Vakhid, a historian from Grozny, neither the World Islamic League itself, nor other religious organizations would be able to influence the global processes.
