A man sentenced for killing a football fan complains of violation of his rights in prison

After the complaint had been filed about torture in a penal colony in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, inspections were carried out in a formal way, and violations of prisoners' rights still take place, said Aslan Cherkesov, a native of Nalchik, sentenced for killing football fan Yegor Sviridov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2017, Aslan Cherkesov complained about regular torture in the penal colony of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The Department for the Krasnoyarsk Territory of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) reports starting verification of complaints about torture used against other 47 prisoners.

Yegor Sviridov was killed in Moscow on December 6, 2010. The murder provoked riots in Manezh Square and mass demonstrations of nationalists. Entrepreneur Aslan Cherkesov, who arrived in Moscow from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) shortly before those events, was found guilty of the murder, although he pleaded not guilty.

In his video message posted on the website of the Kabardino-Balkarian Human Rights Centre (HRC), Aslan Cherkesov called on rights defenders to pay attention to the "total lawlessness" in penitentiary institutions in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

In particular, Aslan Cherkesov stated that loud music was constantly heard in cells and prisoners did not get their food ration, medicine, and medical treatment.

"We have registered a lot of facts of prejudice towards people from Northern Caucasus in Russian prisons. Aslan Cherkesov has become a symbol of such an attitude," noted Valery Khatazhukov, the head of the Kabardino-Balkarian HRC.
