Children of Georgian woman brought from Iraq to Tbilisi

Three children of a Georgian woman, convicted in Baghdad to lifelong imprisonment for involvement in terrorism, has been in prison with their mother, until the authorities agreed to transfer them to Georgia, Teya Tsulukiani, the Minister of Justice, has stated.

The youngest of the kids is two years old; the oldest is six. According to Ms Tsulukiani, in Georgia, they will be handed over to their grandparents for rearing.

"They will go to school and get an education, while we pass to the second step aimed to save their mother – with the help of Iraqi colleagues, to reconsider her life imprisonment," the "News-Georgia" quotes the minister as saying.

As explained by Minister Tsulukiani, the kids' mother, a 25-year-old citizen of Georgia, had left for the Middle East with her husband, who fought on the side of the militants of the 'Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court. The man died during the battles for Mosul; and his wife was arrested on charges of complicity with the IS. Parents of the woman began searching for their grandchildren and appealed to human rights defenders.

In May, Teya Tsulukiani met the convicted woman in a Baghdad prison; and she confirmed her desire to send the children to her parents, the Georgian Channel One has reported.

According to Tsulukiani, the woman is the only native of Georgia convicted in Iraq, whose parents now live in Georgia. Her husband was a citizen of Russia.
