Azerbaijani activists set up human rights organization in Georgia

Activists Avtandil Mamedov and Elchin Namazov, who are in emigration Georgia, have founded the "Institute for the Defence of Rights and Freedoms" to inform international organizations about the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, as well as to support Azerbaijani immigrants in Georgia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Avtandil Mamedov (also known as Mamedli) headed a regional branch of the Azerbaijani National Committee of the Helsinki Civil Assembly. Elchin Namazov was engaged in advocacy, but in September 2011 the presidium expelled him from the bar when he defended Rufat Gadjibeili, an opposition activist. Later, this decision was upheld by the court, and the lawyer began engaging in human rights activities.

The establishment of the "Institute for the Defence of Rights and Freedoms" (IDRF) in Georgia is caused by the paralysis of the activities of human rights organizations inside Azerbaijan, says the statement of the new human rights organization, released on October 8.

The Institute intends to engage in informing international organizations about the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, as well as providing legal assistance and other possible support to Azerbaijani emigrants in Georgia, says the statement.
