Brother of former Armenian Prime Minister indicted

Genrikh Abramyan, a brother of Ovik Abramyan, a former Prime Minister of Armenia, is accused of illegal acquisition and storage of arms and ammunition. The court decided to arrest him.

On August 8, it became known that Ambik Gevorkyan and Genrikh Abramyan had been detained after a search of the mechanic-repair factory located in the village of Mkhchyan in the Ararat Region, where Gevorkyan had been registered as the factory owner. During the search conducted within the case about the events of March 1-2, 2008, in Yerevan, investigators found a lot of weapons at the factory.

On March 1-2, 2008, in Yerevan, after dispersal of the rally, organized by the oppositionists, who disagreed with the victory of Serzh Sargsyan at the presidential election, mass riots occurred. As a result of them, ten people were killed, and more than 250 others were injured. On March 1, with the approval of the Armenian Parliament, Robert Kocharyan, the then president, introduced a 20-day-long state of emergency and banned demonstrations. On July 27, 2018, Kocharyan, accused of overthrowing the constitutional order in connection with the dispersal of protest actions, was arrested.

According to investigators, Abramyan had purchased the weapons in accord with Ambik Gevorkyan. All the weapons were kept at the factory, the Investigating Service of Armenia has reported.

Let us remind you that Ovik Abramyan was the Prime Minister of Armenia since April 13, 2014. On September 8, 2016, he resigned.
