Azerbaijani blogger Mekhman Guseinov released from colony to say farewell to his mother

The mother of the blogger Mekhman Guseinov, who is serving his sentence in the colony, has died. The blogger was released for several hours to say farewell to her. Mekhman Guseinov and his brother Emin Guseinov, who is in political emigration in Europe, have accused the Azerbaijani authorities of their mother's death, treating the circumstances of her death as strange.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 30, about ten journalists and NGO activists asked the Azerbaijani Penitentiary Service to provide Mekhman Guseinov with a leave to meet his seriously ill mother. The Service refused, saying that the blogger fails to participate in "correctional events" held in the colony.

Mekhman Guseinov had stated being tortured after his detention for disobeying the police. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) accused him of slander; and he was sentenced to two years in prison.

Firangiz (Frangiz) Guseinova died on August 6, said Emin Guseinov, Mekhman's brother, the executive director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), who is in political emigration in Europe. He called his mother's death a "political murder."

"Prior to Mekhman's arrest, she had no health problems," Emin Guseinov has stated.
