In Kuban, organizers of competition sentenced to imprisonment for diver's death
Two men were sentenced to imprisonment in a penal colony for organizing illegal spearfishing competitions, which resulted in the death of a man, the Prosecutor's Office reported.
The court has found that on November 20, 2016, in the Smirnov River on the territory of the Khopyor rural settlement in Kuban, two persons organized the spearfishing competition for money without any permission from the authorities. One of the participants of the competition a 22-year-old resident of the Ust-Labinsk District was given a handicraft diving suit that was structurally unable to ensure safe diving into water. As a result, the diver drowned, reported the Prosecutor's Office of the Krasnodar Territory.
"Meanwhile, the defendants failed to meet the most elementary requirements to ensure the safety of participants of the competition: no rescue equipment was available, no rescues from the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) and ambulance services were invited, and the participants of the competition got no instructions before diving," the Prosecutor's Office of the Krasnodar Territory reported.
The court sentenced one of the defendants to two years and the second to 1.8 years of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony.
