SC refuses to transfer trial in Oyub Titiev's case outside Chechnya

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has dismissed the motion filed by the defenders of Oyub Titiev, the head of the "Memorial" office in Grozny, who sought to change the territorial jurisdiction of the client's case, and extended the arrest of the rights defender until July 25.

Since January 11, 2018, Oyub Titiev is under arrest on charges of possessing marijuana. The rights defender asserts that the drugs were planted on him by a law enforcer.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the indictment was delivered to Oyub Titiev on June 22, and after that the case was transferred for consideration to the Shali City Court. Today, the Supreme Court of Chechnya has started the consideration of the motion filed by the Oyub Titiev's defence to change the territorial jurisdiction of the client's case.

The Chechen SC has dismissed the motion of the Oyub Titiev's defenders to change the territorial jurisdiction of the client's case and noted that it is to be considered at the Shali City Court, reports the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, who attended the court hearing.

The judge has also granted the prosecutor's request and left Oyub Titiev under arrest until July 25.

Oyub Titiev attended the pronouncement of the Court's decision through a video conference and requested his advocates to challenge both decisions of the Court. The Oyub Titiev's defenders announced the intention to challenge the Court's decision, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Let us remind you that according to the defenders, the case should be considered outside Chechnya, since the leaders of the republic have repeatedly claimed Oyub Titiev was guilty. The defenders believe the pressure was thereby exerted on the judges.
