Desecration of Buddha statue in Elista turns into verdict to two Dagestanis

A resident of Dagestan has been convicted for inciting hatred towards Kalmyks in the context of the case of Said Osmanov, who was found guilty in Elista of desecrating the statue of Buddha.

On June 27, the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office reported that a resident of the Tlyaratin District received a suspended sentence for his comment calling for national-motivated violence in a group of people. He fully admitted his guilt, a law enforcement source has reported.

"This guy posted his appeal on the Internet in connection with the events in April in Kalmykia," the source has explained.

On July 28, 2016, a court in Elista found Said Osmanov guilty of desecrating the statue of Buddha and inciting the interethnic hatred, and sentenced him to two years of conditional imprisonment with a probation period of one year.

The article on the incitement of hatred or enmity on the grounds of sex, race, nationality, etc. is not as often applied in Dagestan, as in other regions of Russia, said Rinat Gamidov, an advocate.

"Mostly, in the republic, cases are initiated about public appeals to or propaganda of terrorism," the advocate told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
