Echmiadzin Mayor resigns after citizens' protests

Karen Grigoryan, a son of the Armenian MP Manvel Grigoryan, who was detained on suspicion of illegally storing weapons, resigned from his post of the Mayor of Echmiadzin.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 14, protests with the demand for the resignation of Karen Grigoryan were started in Echmiadzin. On June 17, the opponents of the Mayor refused to meet him and continued their protest action.

Echmiadzin Mayor Karen Grigoryan announced his resignation. On his Facebook page, he wrote that he had resigned "on his own."

On June 16, Manvel Grigoryan, a father of Karen Grigoryan, was detained on suspicion of possession of weapons. On the same day, in Yerevan, his supporters started protest actions and announced their intention not to stop protests until Manvel Grigoryan was released. On June 17, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Manvel Grigoryan was involved in theft of humanitarian aid intended for servicemen. On the same day, the court found the Manvel Grigoryan's detention justified.
