"Kinotavr" participants wear T-shirts with photos of arrested film directors

At the "Kinotavr" film festival opened in Sochi on June 2, friends and colleagues of film directors Kirill Serebrennikov and Oleg Sentsov held an action to draw attention to the criminal cases against the Russian and Ukrainian film directors.

On August 23, Kirill Serebrennikov, the art director of the "Gogol Centre" Theatre in Moscow, was placed under house arrest on the charge of fraud. In 2015, Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director, was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment for creating a terrorist community. The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" recognized him as a political prisoner.

On June 3, before the screening of his film "Anna's War", which opened the programme of the "Kinotavr" full-length film contest this year, well-known film director Alexei Fedorchenko announced his support of Kirill Serebrennikov and Oleg Sentsov. On June 4, he came to a press conference wearing a T-shirt with the portrait of Oleg Sentsov.

On June 4, before the short-length film contest, film director Mikhail Borodin, one of the contestants, also voiced words of his support for Kirill Serebrennikov and Oleg Sentsov. On the same day, a photo of participants and members of the "Kinotavr" jury wearing T-shirts with portraits of Oleg Sentsov and Kirill Serebrennikov was posted in the public "Russian Cinema in Top" of the social network VKontakte.

"Concerning Oleg Sentsov, I have no doubt that he is not guilty. And now when his life and health are literally under threat, it is time to talk about that at least aloud. Perhaps, that will not help him to get at large, but at least people will be aware of his case," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Anton Dolin, a well-known film critic.
