Syria recognizes independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

Syria, South Ossetia and Abkhazia have announced the mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations, the Ministries of Foreign Affaires (MFAs) of these countries have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 8, 2008, hostilities began between Georgia and South Ossetia. Russia interfered in the conflict. On August 26, the then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed decrees on recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Among other sovereign states, the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia was also recognized by Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and Tuvalu.

"Syria has today recognized Abkhazia as a sovereign state, I congratulate all of us! There is no better gift on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Victory Day and Independence!" Daur Kove, the head of the Abkhazian MFA, wrote in the Facebook.

In his turn, Anatoly Bibilov, the head of South Ossetia, has announced his country's readiness to develop political, economic and cultural ties with Syria and thanked President Bashar al Assad for the recognition of the republic's independence.

Let us remind you that Georgia regards Abkhazia and South Ossetia as its occupied territories.
