A nephew of Chechen rights defender Oyub Titiev arrested for two months

Relatives of Oyub Titiev, the head for the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" office in Grozny, treat the detention of his nephew Adam Titiev in Chechnya as a provocation. The detention took place on the eve of the meeting of Alexander Cherkasov, the head of the HRC "Memorial", with the French President.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Adam Titiev was detained on suspicion of drug possession, as reported by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov on May 25. He mentioned the meeting of Alexander Cherkasov and French President Emmanuel Macron, during which Alexander Cherkasov described the Oyub Titiev's case and attacks on the HRC "Memorial" in Northern Caucasus.

Starting from January 11, Oyub Titiev is under arrest on the charge of marijuana possession. The rights defender said that the drugs had been planted to him by a law enforcer.

Adam Titiev was detained at night on May 22. He was arrested for two months. According to investigators, 120 grams of marijuana were found in his pocket, reports Svetlana Gannushkina, the head of the Committee "Civil Assistance", with reference to relatives of Oyub and Adam Titiev.

"Relatives believe it was a provocation," the rights defender emphasizes.

Svetlana Gannushkina has also noted that 45-year-old Adam Titiev suffers from serious illnesses, he uses crutches after a road accident, and he "rarely met Oyub Titiev in recent years."

There is no connection between the cases of Oyub and Adam Titiev, and the meeting between Alexander Cherkasov and Emmanuel Macron proves the matter has reached the international level, the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" reports.
