FSB confirms detention of 11 people in KChR

A unit of the "At-Takfir Wal-Hijra", an extremist organization, banned in Russia by the court, had operated in two districts of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR) and planned to create a Sharia state in Northern Caucasus, the Russia's FSB (Federal Security Bureau) has announced today.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 24 it became known that 11 supporters of "At-Takfir Wal-Hijra"* had been detained in the KChR.

The "At-Takfir Wal-Hijra"* is an international grouping of religious radicals, created in the 1970s in Egypt. Its activities in Egypt were banned by the authorities in 1977; and its supporters moved their activities to other countries. On September 15, 2010, the Supreme Court of Russia found the organization as extremist and banned its activities in the territory of Russia.

According to the FSB, 11 members of the unit of the banned organization has spread the ideas of radical Islam and wanted to create a Sharia state in the territory of the Adyge-Khabl and Khabez Districts of the KChR, the "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" has reported today with reference to the press service of the local branch of the FSB.

"The members of the religious extremist grouping were spreading the ideas of radical Islam and had intentions to create a state with a Sharia form of ruling in the territory of Northern Caucasus," the "Interfax-South" has reported today citing its FSB source.

* The organization has been recognized as extremist and banned in Russia by the court.
