Azerbaijani activist arrested after criticizing Aliev in social networks

Aflatun Safarov, an activist of the Lankaran branch of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has been sentenced to 30 days of administrative arrest on charges of disobeying policemen.

Safarov was detained on May 18; and on May 19, the Lankaran District Court found him guilty under Article 535.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (disobedience to lawful demands of a policeman).

The circumstances of his detention are unknown. Law enforcers have spread no information about Safarov's arrest, while the PFPA links it with his critical publications in social networks.

"The party believes that the real reason for Safarov's arrest was in his critical publications in the Facebook social network," the "Turan" News Agency reported on May 19.

The PFPA's page on the Facebook specifies, in particular, that Aflatun Safarov placed a poster, in which Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev was called a dictator.
