Italian court finds a refugee from Chechnya guilty of terrorism

On April 23, the court of the southern Italian city of Bari found Chechen native Eli Bombataliev, guilty of plotting a terror act and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment, despite his spouse claiming the criminal case had been fabricated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in early July 2017, in the Italian region of Puglia, the law enforcement bodies took into custody a 38-year-old native of Chechnya suspected of attacking law enforcers in Grozny in December 2014. It was reported that the man arrived in Italy from Belgium and began working at a cultural centre in the city of Foggia. He was suspected of involvement in the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) banned in Russia by court's decision and preparation of a terror act. His wife claimed the charge of terrorism against herself and her husband had been fabricated.

On December 4, 2014, members of illegal armed formations (IAFs) organized an attack on law enforcers in Grozny. A counterterrorist operation (CTO) legal regime was introduced in the centre of the city. As a result of the armed clashes in the Grozny Press House and the secondary school No. 20, where law enforcers blocked members of the armed underground, 14 law enforcers, 10 militants, and two civilians were killed.

In Italy, the 38-year-old native of Chechnya is sentenced to five years of imprisonment for plotting a terror act, the "Life" reported on April 23 with reference to the information from the Italian agency "Ansa".

In Foggia, Eli Bombataliev was granted the refugee status and law enforcers believe it was Belgium where he was plotting a mass terror to be committed, since he had connections there with local terrorist units, the RIA "Novosti" reports.
