Murder of a Chechen young woman in Khasavyurt recalls tradition of blood feud

A resident of Khasavyurt, detained on suspicion of a brutal murder of a young woman, may become a target of blood feud. This opinion was voiced by Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya, Director at the Conflict Analysis and Prevention Centre. An ancient tradition remains relevant, since people consider a punishment for a murder to be inadequate, believes Shamil Beno, a Chechen political analyst.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that rights defenders treated as "typical" a murder of a young woman on the road in Khasavyurt.

On March 30, a 25-year-old man was detained on suspicion of killing a young woman from Chechnya. Video records from surveillance cameras show that he beat the young woman with his feet and used a stone to smash her head. According to the preliminary version, the murder was motivated by jealousy.

Acts of blood feud were repeatedly committed in prisons, noted Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya.

If it is a question of deliberate murder, then, according to the tradition, there is no time limitation for blood feud, explains political analyst Shamil Beno. From the point of view of blood feudists, that is, the aggrieved party, there is no difference in which region a murder took place.

According to Shamil Beno, in the past 10 years, in Chechnya, the number of murders committed for criminal motives decreased. Therefore, cases of blood feud occur less frequently.

The political analyst has also added that according to the Chechen customs, an act of blood feud is to be carried out by a person from the affected party, that is, a close relative of a murdered person.

Meanwhile, the principle of blood feud does not apply to accidental killings by negligence, for example, in the event of an accident.
