Georgia demands from Russian diplomat to leave the country

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated today that one of the employees of the interests section of the Russian Federation at the Swiss Embassy should leave the country within the next seven days. The Georgian authorities explain this as a solidarity gesture with Great Britain.

Thus, Georgia has joined the countries, which decided to expel Russian diplomats in connection with the poisoning of the former GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian General Staff) officer Sergey Skripal in London.

The Georgian MFA has also stated that it "condemns the use of chemical weapons in the territory of the United Kingdom." According to the ministry, "this creates a serious problem for the general security."

Let us remind you that Georgian-Russian diplomatic relations were interrupted in August 2008 after Moscow had recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Since 2009, Switzerland is acting as an intermediary between Georgia and Russia. In Tbilisi, there is a section of interests of the Russian Federation under the Swiss Embassy. A similar section, but in the interests of Georgia, was opened in Moscow, the RIA "Novosti" reports.
