Opposition holds rally to protest against presidential election in Azerbaijan

In Baku, the action under the slogan: "No robbery, stop the monarchy!" has been arranged by the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and the "Musavat" Party. This is the first joint rally arranged by those opposition forces since 2013.

The enhanced security measures were introduced in Baku in connection with the rally. The police cordoned off the stadium around its whole perimeter and searched everyone who went to the rally. In their hands, participants of the action were holding portraits of political prisoners and flags of Azerbaijan and the European Union. The action was supported by a number of public organizations, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

In Azerbaijan, the presidential election was initially scheduled for October 17, 2018, but on February 5, Ilham Aliev rescheduled it for April 11.

President Ilham Aliev became the first officially registered candidate. By March 10, the Central Election Commission (CEC) approved seven candidates to run for the presidency.
