Baku residents claim impunity of war crimes in Khojaly

The crimes like the seizure of Khojaly and massacre of its residents should never go unpunished, participants of the commemoration action for the victims of the Khojaly tragedy held in Baku have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today, on February 26, Azerbaijan marks the 26th anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy.

At night of February 25-26, 1992, during the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian armed forces assaulted the town of Khojaly mainly populated by Azerbaijanis. For more than four months, the town of Khojaly stayed completely cordoned off until the Armenian forces took control over it. During this time, according to the Azerbaijani authorities, 613 civilians were killed, including 63 children, 106 women, and 70 old people. 1275 civilians were taken hostage. Until present, the fate of 150 of them is unknown.

Thousands have taken part in the today's march to the memorial complex "Mother's Call" in Baku, erected in memory of the victims of the Khojaly tragedy. Leaders of the country, MPs and governmental officials and Khojaly residents laid flowers to the memorial, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"I come here every year. Khojaly is our pain, its residents were killed with unprecedented cruelty; they did not spare old people and children. We want justice for Khojaly," Leyla Askerova, a Baku resident who took part in the action, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Aga Mamedov, a Baku resident, said that he could not take part in today's march, but he brought flowers to the memorial the day before, on February 25.

"The Khojaly genocide is one of the most terrible pages in the history of Azerbaijan. Defenceless people were exterminated with some special cruelty; such crimes should not go unpunished and need an international tribunal," the man told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
