Yerevan residents achieve repair of prison sewage
The protests of Yerevan townspeople and the action of the "Apricot Country" Party in the Council of Elders have forced the city bosses to start repairing the sewage system of the Nubarashen Prison.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 12, Yerevan residents blocked the road in the Nubarashen District and demanded to repair the sewage system of the Nubarashen Prison, complaining about the unbearable stench and anti-sanitary conditions. On February 13, Marine Khachatryan and Sona Agekyan, activists of the "Apricot Country", trying to draw authorities' attention to the problem, brought cans with sewage water collected near the Nubarashen Prison and wanted to put them on the table of the Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan. However, members of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) blocked their way, and then forced them out of the hall. According to Ms Khachatryan, she was hit several times on her head.
Today, in the vicinity of the Nubarashen Prison, the works began to repair the sewage system, Teimina Vardanyan, a member of the Council of Elders of Yerevan from the "Elk" faction, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
The workers told her that the works began at the order of the administration of the Nubarashen Prison.
"The stench was really unbearable. Tenants of the neighbouring houses told that they had complained for years to various state agencies and bodies, but the problem was not addressed," Ms Vardanyan said.
