Activists help Pankisi women start businesses

The project of the "Kakheti Regional Development Foundation" (KRDF) has helped women from the Pankisi Gorge to master crafts, organize businesses and learn to protect their rights.

The project "Strengthening Women in the Pankisi Gorge for Change" is implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Government of Sweden within the joint UN programme "For Gender Equality." The project launched in December 2016 and completed in December 2017 was aimed to support the economic independence of women from the Pankisi Gorge, raise their awareness of their rights and strengthen their social status. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Nata Bekauri, a project manager, a member of the NGO "Kakheti Regional Development Foundation".

The women who took part in the programme got small grants to implement their projects on cattle breeding, production of dairy products, poultry farming, beekeeping and craftwork. Those grants allowed the women to start their own production, Nata Bekauri noted.

The products produced by the Pankisi women who got the grants were presented at the fair, which took place at the tourist Shardeni Street in Tbilisi on December 14.
