Azerbaijan calmly accepts Trump's statement about Jerusalem
The absence of mass protests in Azerbaijan after the US has recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is connected with the policy of Baku, forced to manoeuvre between the Muslim world and the arms supply partnership. This opinion was expressed by political analysts and journalists questioned by the "Caucasian Knot".
On December 7, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) supported the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the existence of two states with the capital of Palestine in East Jerusalem. On September 11, a protest action was held in front of the US Embassy in Baku.
In general, residents of Azerbaijan are indifferent about the recognition of the United States of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, believes Tofiq Turkel, an observer of the agency "Turan".
"On the one hand, being a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Azerbaijan should be in solidarity with Palestine. On the other hand, Israel is a major trade and economic partner and supplier of modern weapons to Azerbaijan," Tofiq Turkel said.
"The media and ordinary people show greater interest in the recent events in Ukraine around the detention of Mikhail Saakashvili than in what is happening in the Middle East," stated in turn Togrul Juvarly, a member of the Azerbaijani Public National Committee for European Integration.
There are fears among the people that after the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the US can support the Armenian side in the Karabakh conflict; however, those fears are not grounded, believes Bashir Suleimanly, the leader of the Institute of Legal Initiatives.
