In Georgia, court extends detention for Turkish lecturer Çabuk

The Tbilisi court has extended the term of detention in custody for Mustafa Emre Çabuk, a lecturer from Turkey, for other three months. An advocate of Mustafa Emre Çabuk treats the court's decision as unfounded.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 24, Mustafa Emre Çabuk was detained in the Georgian capital at the request of Turkey. On May 26, the court sentenced him to three months of arrest with further extradition. Mustafa Emre Çabuk has been working in Georgia since 2002, and in recent years, he worked as a manager at the Tbilisi Private Demirel College. After his detention, Mustafa Emre Çabuk has applied for refugee status, but was refused, and he challenged the refusal. On November 21, the Tbilisi City Court upheld the refusal to grant Mustafa Emre Çabuk the refugee status.

In Turkey, Mustafa Çabuk was accused of having links with the FETO, an organization of supporters of the preacher Fethullah Gulen. Mustafa himself has refused to plead guilty.

"Today, the court has extended the term of the extradition detention for Mustafa Emre Çabuk for other three months. I treat the court's decision as unfounded. Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office has motivated its request by claiming he may flee," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Soso Baratashvili, an advocate of Mustafa Emre Çabuk.

According to him, as a result of the today's decision pronounced by the Tbilisi City Court, Mustafa Emre Çabuk will remain in custody until February 24, 2018.
