ECtHR obliges Armenia to provide medical treatment to Vaan Shirkhanyan
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has obliged the Armenian government to make an immediate assessment for the health state of Vaan Shirkhanyan, former Deputy Defence Minister of Armenia, and provide him with the necessary medical treatment. This has been reported by his advocate.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Vaan Shirkhanyan was detained on December 19, 2015. According to the advocate, during the period of his detention in custody, the decease of Vaan Shirkhanyan has aggravated, and his acquired health problems threaten his life.
In 1995-1999, Vaan Shirkhanyan held the position of the First Deputy Defence Minister of Armenia. He is charged in the case against Arthur Vardanyan, the leader of the organization "Armenian Shield", who headed an armed grouping.
On November 9, at the request of the Vaan Shirkhanyan's defence, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) obliged the Armenian government to take immediate measures to assess the health state of the former official and provide him with necessary medical treatment. This was told on November 10 to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Hayk Alumyan, the Vaan Shirkhanyan's advocate.
The detention of Vaan Shirkhanyan in custody is incompatible with his health state, the advocate believes.
"The defence has got the independent experts' opinion, according to which the conditions of arrest threaten the Vaan Shirkhanyan's life," the advocate stated.
