Baku court leaves Gezyal Bairamly behind bars

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has rejected the complaint against the extension of arrest of Gezyal Bairamly, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA).

On May 25, Gezyal Bairamly, the deputy chair of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was detained when she was returning from Georgia. The State Border Service of Azerbaijan reported on seizure from the activist the undeclared amount of 12,000 US dollars and Gezyal Bairamly was arrested on charges of smuggling. In June, the Gezyal Bairamly's defence reported that the deputy chair of the PFPA suffered from joint disease and did not receive the necessary medical treatment at the SIZO.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 6, the Nasimi District Court of Baku extended Ms Bairamly’s arrest until December 25.

The BCA’s decision to upheld the arrest extension is unjustified and biased, Gezyal’s advocate Elchin Sadygov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, noting that the defence asked the court to take Bairamly's health condition into account.

"Prior to her arrest, she had undergone serious surgeries; she has been long suffering from jaw arthrosis and, therefore, was operated on three times. Besides, she has endocrinology problems, and she has to permanently take medications. Her blood lacks leukocytes; she has to take medicines all the time, otherwise, she may have leukaemia," said Sadygov, adding that the charge against Bairamly does not assume a grave crime; therefore, there is no reason to keep Bairamly in SIZO (pre-trial prison).
