Dagestanis tell about Kurban-Bayram celebration (+video)

On September 1, over 10,000 Muslims gathered in the central Juma Mosque in Makhachkala to hold a festive prayer on the occasion of Kurban-Bayram. The Dagestanis, interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, told how they celebrated the holiday.

Having committed a sacrificial slaughter, a Muslim should feed the poor; while Islamic principles of slaughtering animals assume causing them as little sufferings as possible.

According to Ramazan, a resident of Makhachkala, in his family, the main holiday attribute is a sacrifice. For the third year in a row he entrusts this ritual to the local charitable foundation named "Nadezhda" (Hope).

On that day, Dagestan opened about 50 places for sacrificing animals; some of the places were equipped with disinfecting means. In most of them, veterinarians were present.

Gamzat Magomedov, another Makhachkala resident, believes that whenever possible the rite should be administered at home and obligatory by the head of the family.

Magomed Abdullaev, a resident of the village of Karata, has noted that the disagreement over the main sacrifice holiday were caused by the fact that the followers of one of the Sufi trends marked Uraza-Bayram a day later the officially announced date; therefore, their Kurban-Bayram was one day later than of the others.
