AI calls on General Prosecutor to investigate beatings and torture of Krasnaya Turbina residents

The federal authorities should promptly investigate reports about violations of the rights of two men from the Krasnaya Turbina village, accused of attempting to leave for Syria, and about beating of their fellow villagers who supported them. This was stated by the human rights organization "Amnesty International" (AI).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Magomed Taramov and Djamalai Tazbiev, residents of the Grozny village of Krasnaya Turbina, were detained after a militants' attack on Grozny in December 2016. According to the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta", they complained of torture, and their relatives were beaten by policemen after more than 150 residents of Chechnya had requested General Prosecutor Yuri Chaika to punish the persons guilty of torture. The local residents consider the information about torture to be true.

"The AI is concerned over the reports of torture and other forms of ill-treatment, arbitrary detentions and intimidation of those who tried to draw public attention to violations," states the letter posted on the AI's website.

Gauri Van Gulik, Europe Director at the AI, has called on the General Prosecutor to carry out an "expeditious, impartial and thorough investigation" into the situation in the Krasnaya Turbina village, check the legality of the detention in custody of Magomed Taramov and Djamalai Tazbiev from January 27 to March, and find out whether they voluntarily waived the services of an independent advocate.
