Memorial registers 3101 deaths in five years
The Human Rights Centre Memorial registered 3101 killings of local residents between mid-2000 and March 2005, Memorial expert Dmitry Grushkin told Caucasian Knot. The human rights group registered 1,543 abductions between 2002 and March 2005 inclusive. Of that number 482 have been released or ransomed, 159 found dead, 892 gone missing, and 10 remain under examination.
Thirty-nine local residents have been killed in Chechnya this year, including 21 civilians, nine Chechen law enforcers and six members of illegal armed groups. Another three have not yet been identified, said Grushkin.
It should be noted Memorial can monitor on approximately just 30% of Chechnya's territory and even so it cannot register all deaths.
