BCA upholds verdict to Giyas Ibragimov

The Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has dismissed the complaint filed by Azerbaijani activist Giyas Ibragimov against the verdict of guilty and upheld the decision to deprive him of liberty for 10 years. The defence intends to file a cassation appeal.

"Instead of correcting the errors of the first instance court, the BCA violated the law and actually deprived Giyas Ibragimov of his final speech... The judge disconnected a microphone for the young man enclosed in a glass cage-'aquarium'," said advocate Elchin Sadygov.

According to him, the father of Giyas Ibragimov "began to loudly express his indignation about the actions of judges who deprived his son of his final speech." However, the judge removed the man from the courtroom.

Elchin Sadygov has noted that "unreliable evidence was presented against the activist, since they were got with violation of the defendant's rights and under torture."

Besides, according to the advocate, the protocol of detention was drawn up eight hours after the activist had been taken into custody. "That fact gives grounds to believe that drugs were planted into a Giyas Ibragimov's pocket after his detention," stated Elchin Sadygov.

Shura Amiraslanova, the mother of the activist, fears for his life. She appealed to international organizations in connection with the deterioration of her son's vision.

Isa Gambar, the leader of the Centre for National Strategic Thought, who observed the trial, called the verdict an "execution of a political order."
