Gezyal Bairamly arrested for three months

The Sabail District Court of Baku has pronounced the pre-trial restriction measure in the form of an arrest for three months against Gezyal Bairamly, the deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) accused of smuggling. Gezyal Bairamly has rejected the accusation and claimed being prosecuted because of her opposition political activities.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the evening of May 25, Gezyal Bairamly was detained when she was returning from Georgia. According to the State Border Service (SBS) of Azerbaijan, the money in the amount of 12,000 US dollars not indicated in a customs declaration was discovered in her hand luggage and seized.

In the evening on Friday, May 26, Gezyal Bairamly was brought to Baku to the central office of the Azerbaijani SBS, where she was charged under Article 206.1 (smuggling) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. Closer to midnight, Gezyal Bairamly was taken to the Sabail District Court where, behind closed doors, the judge pronounced against her the pre-trial restriction measure in the form of a three-months arrest. This has been told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today by advocate Elchin Sadygov.

According to him, Gezyal Bairamly has rejected the charge of attempting to transport undeclared 12,000 US dollars.

"Gezyal Bairamly has said that the money was planted to her bag by law enforcers. Gezyal Bairamly has claimed that she fell victim to a provocation against her because of her political activities," said Elchin Sadygov.
