ECtHR prolongs deadline for receiving objections to Russia's replies in Mardiros Demerchyan's case

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has extended until April 1 the deadline for receiving objections from the defence to the response of the Russian authorities in the case of Mardiros Demerchyan, a Sochi builder, who claimed to be tortured. This has been reported by the "Public Verdict" Foundation, which provides the Sochi builder with legal assistance.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in June 2015, Mardiros Demerchyan appealed to the ECtHR with a complaint about torture and the lack of investigation into his complaint in Russia.

Elena Pershakova, the chief of the legal department of the "Public Verdict" Foundation, believes that in their notes, the Russian authorities did not answer any question put by the European Court.

According to the authorities of the Russian Federation, in the Mardiros Demerchyan's case, there is no evidence of ill-treatment used against the complainant by law enforcers. Meanwhile, Georgy Matyushkin, Deputy Minister of Justice, the Russian representative to the ECtHR, asked the European Court to pay attention to the contradictions contained in the testimonies of the complainant's and physicians.

Lyudmila Demerchyan, the wife of the complainant, doubted the truthfulness of the testimonies given by the policemen and physicians.
