UN special rapporteur visits Ingushetia

Special Rapporteur on violence against women of the UN Commission on Human Rights Yakin Erturk arrived in Ingushetia on December 20. The aim of the visit of Ms. Erturk to Ingushetia is to collect reliable information about the state of women in the republic and study the human rights situation in the region, a source in the UNHCR field office in Nazran told the Caucasian Knot correspondent. Ms Erturk visited places of compact residence of refugees from North Osetia - Alania and the Chechen Republic, talked with inhabitants of the refugee camps, and familiarized herself with the problems most typical of women living under such conditions.

"It's clear that problems connected with violations of women's rights are usual in Chechnya and Ingushetia. At the same time all these problems stay in the background in the situation of lawlessness and military high-handedness in Chechnya," an activist of a Chechen non-governmental organization said in his speech.
