International "Memorial" challenges its recognition as foreign agent

Today, Elena Zhemkova, the executive director of the International "Memorial", has reported on filing an appeal to the Moscow City Court against the decision of the Zamoskvorechye Court of Moscow to recognize the legitimacy of the introduction of the NGO in the register of foreign agents.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 4, 2016, it became known that the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) decided to include the International "Memorial" in the register of foreign agents. The "Memorial" treated the MoJ's decision as unlawful. On December 16, 2016, the Zamoskvorechye Court of Moscow recognized the legitimacy of the introduction of the International "Memorial" in the register of foreign agents.

Today, Elena Zhemkova, the executive director of the International "Memorial", has reported on filing an appeal to the Moscow City Court with the demand to cancel the decision of the Zamoskvorechye Court of Moscow.

Activists of the International "Memorial" have found out that the MoJ erroneously treated the materials published by the "Memorial" on its website on issues of public concern as an organization of political activities. According to the activists of the International "Memorial", the materials have realized the right to freedom of expression which cannot be treated as political activity.
