World Bank to allocate 15 million US dollars to Azerbaijan for assistance to refugees

Until the end of 2020, the World Bank will allocate more than 15 million US dollars for improvement of the living conditions of 371,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in Azerbaijan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2011, Azerbaijan and the World Bank (WB) signed a loan agreement for 50 million US dollars under the programme to improve the living conditions of IDPs from the Karabakh conflict zone. It was planned that the total cost of the programme would amount to 78.5 million US dollars. Of the above amount, 28.5 million US dollars should be allocated by the Government of Azerbaijan.

In Azerbaijan, IDPs are persons who lived in Nagorno-Karabakh. 7% of the Azerbaijani population was displaced as a result of the Karabakh conflict.

In particular, the money is directed to employment, self-employment, and improvement of the quality of life of IDPs. As at October 15, 2016, the WB already allocated loans for implementation of 307 micro-projects helping 239,997 IDPs and refugees.
