Arab scholars Ali al-Jifri and Ahmed el-Tayeb renounce Grozny fatwa

Islamic scholars Ali al-Jifri and Ahmed el-Tayeb have announced their non-involvement in the fatwa, adopted following the theological conference in Grozny. However, subordinates of Ramzan Kadyrov associated the credibility of the Grozny theological conference with their names. Authors of the fatwa declared Salafis a dangerous religious sect, while theologians Ali al-Jifri and Ahmed el-Tayeb called them brothers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 27, following the outcome of the Islamic Conference on the topic "The followers of the Sunnah: who are they?", participants of the conference in Grozny adopted a fatwa, which recognized only followers of the Sufi tariqat as the true Muslims. The Grozny fatwa treated supporters of the Salafi concept of Islam as members of a dangerous sect.

After the Grozny theological conference on the topic "The followers of the Sunnah: who are they?", the Chechen authorities noted that one of its major participants were Ahmed Muhammad el-Tayeb, Rector of the Islamic University "Al-Azhar" (Egypt), and Habib Ali al-Jifri, a respected Sufi leader.

According to Ahmed el-Tayeb, "he managed to deliver a speech only at the opening of the conference, before his leaving." "It dealt with general issues," noted Ahmed el-Tayeb. "As for the resolution, it appeared after we had left the conference. Moreover, we have not seen the resolution earlier and we have not been consulted regarding the development of the document," said Ahmed el-Tayeb.

Meanwhile, on September 30, on air of the Saudi "CBC" TV Channel, Jordanian scholar Ali al-Jifri called Salafis and Wahhabis "brothers." According to him, they "are among those included in the definition of 'people of the Sunnah'."

Ali al-Jifri has noted that "the conference did not provide setting the concepts of 'Salafis' against the concept of 'people of the Sunnah'."
