Archaeologists demand money for museumification Samosdelka settlement

The project of making a museum out of the Samosdelka settlement in Astrakhan Region is not realized because of a lack of funding, said archaeologist Dmitri Vasiliev. The project has been stopped due to sequestration of the budget of the regional targeted programme, local officials explain.

According to Mr Vasiliev, who heads the archaeological laboratory of the Astrakhan State University, the project "Creation of ‘Itil-Saxin’ Outdoor Archaeological Museum" was sent to the regional government back in May 2008.

The Museum Centre "will organize educational activities and festivals," said the author of the project. In the territory of the settlement, archaeologists plan to "make excavations and scientific researches." However, for the eighth year regional authorities fail to fund the project, the scientist has complained, adding that houses in the ancient settlement were destroyed during flooding by the Caspian Sea and the spread Volga in the 13th century.
