Court allows Intigam Aliev to leave for Strasbourg for conference of rights defenders

In Azerbaijan, the court has issued the permission for leaving the country for Intigam Aliev, a rights defender, sentenced to conditional imprisonment. Intigam Aliev is allowed to leave Azerbaijan for 10 days to take part in the international conference on civil society development in the countries-members of the Council of Europe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 22, 2014, Intigam Aliev, the leader of the organization "Society of Legal Education", was sentenced to 7.5 years of imprisonment on the charge of embezzlement and tax evasion. Intigam Aliev did not plead guilty, and his defenders pointed out to numerous violations in the criminal case. On March 28, the court pronounced the decision to replace the actual term of imprisonment with conditional sentence.

Intigam Aliev is invited to the international conference on civil society development in the countries-members of the Council of Europe, which will be held in Strasbourg on June 6-7. Since the rights defender is serving his conditional sentence, he needs to obtain the permission of the court for leaving the country, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Nedjmin Kamil, a son of Intigam Aliev.

According to Nedjmin Kamil, on June 2, the Sumgait City Court issued for Intigam Aliev the permission to leave the country for a period of 10 days, and on June 5, the rights defender left Baku for Strasbourg, where he would deliver a speech at the conference.
